The Museum consists of 500 sculptures that are fixed to the seabed with the help of a special lift. Today the sculptures occupy a total of 420 square meters and weigh over 200 tons and they are placed in 8 meters deep.  Most of them are made by the artist, Jason decaires Taylor while the others are made by five well-known Mexican sculptors.

The Underwater Museum of Art was founded by Jaime Gonzalez Cano, Roberto Diaz Abraham ve Jason decaires Taylor, with an aim to bring to light the relationship between art and environment. All of the sculptures are made from special materials and they have holes in them, to promote coral life and allow the wildlife to colonize. One of the most interesting part of this project is that through time, these sculptures and hence the Underwater Museum would be formed by nature into a coral reef.

The Museum has a total of three galleries, two under water and one on land. Visitors access to the Museum before it will be lost, see sculptures and explore the harmony between the art and nature through an enclosed crystal boat or by scuba diving.
