The effects of the ongoing pandemic can still be felt around the world as well as in the world of art and culture. On the other hand, many ambitious projects that actualized in 2021 show that the culture industry continues to develop despite the disruptions in the schedule.
GES-2 Art Center, Frick Madison, Bourse de Commerce Pinault Collection, Pudong Art Museum, Humboldt Forum, New Munch Museum and M+ are just some of the museums that opened their doors this year. The Courtauld Gallery, an art museum supported by the University of London, opened its doors to visitors again this year after three years of renovation. The new archive building, Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, opened to the public in November by the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, shares a 172-year-old collection with its visitors. The opening of the Great Egyptian Museum, which was planned to be open in 2021, has been postponed to November 2022. The Lucas Oral Expression Art Museum, will be open in 2023, and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi in 2025.
As we approach 2022, we have compiled a list of institutions that are expected to welcome their visitors in the upcoming period for you.
İstanbul Modern
Turkey’s first modern art museum İstanbul Modern was moved from its place Antrepo 4 in Karaköy to its temporary location in Beyoğlu in 2018. Istanbul Modern’s new building will be located on the site of Galataport Istanbul, in its old place, and is aimed to open in the first half of 2022. Designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning world-renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano, who designed many museums and art institutions in the world such as Center Pompidou, Whitney Museum, Centro Botín, Beyeler Foundation Museum, the new center was built considering the city’s texture that brings together the old and the new. The new building will have 15 thousand square meters area. Besides hosting the permanent collection, it focuses on the visitors with its temporary exhibition areas, education workshops, cinema, library, design shop, event areas, cafe and restaurant. The building will also have a sculpture garden and a viewing terrace, was designed with the aim of providing visitors with a unique art experience right next to the Bosphorus.
İstanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum
Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, which closed its doors for renovations in 2009, is gradually opening its doors to its visitors in 2022. The museum, which made its soft opening with its first exhibition on the ground floor on December 16, 2021, has more than 12 thousand artworks in its collection. Redesigned by architect Emre Arolat, winner of the Aga Khan Architecture Award and Mies van der Rohe European Union Contemporary Architecture Award, the building was built in accordance with the industrial heritage of the neighborhood. Containers, steel profiles and concrete slabs used in the design of the new building, which will have an area of approximately 18 thousand square meters. The museum is planned to be fully opened on September 20, 2022, contains valuable examples of Turkish modern art.
The Burrell Collection, Glasgow
The building, where the collection gifted to the city of Glasgow in 1944 by the shipping merchant and philanthropist Sir William Burrell & his wife resides, has been closed since 2016 due to renovation. The project was originally planned to welcome the visitors in 2021, is preparing to open its doors in March 2022 due to the delay caused by the pandemic conditions. Since the previous capacity of the building was not enough to host the entire collection, the campus was redesigned with 68 million pounds investment, considering technology, accessibility and energy saving. The collection has examples of late Gothic and early Renaissance periods, also includes wall coverings, examples of 19th century French art, artworks from China and more than 20 works by Edgar Degas.
Norwegian National Art Museum, Oslo
The Norwegian National Museum of Art aims to gather the institutions of the Art and Design Museum (2016), the Contemporary Art Museum (2017) and the National Museum (2019), which have been gradually closed in Norway over the years, in one place. Built with the support of the Norwegian government, the building will be the largest museum in the Scandinavian countries when it opens. The building was designed by German architects Kleihues and Schuwerk with sustainable energy sources, energy saving, common areas and visitor dynamics in mind. Creations from many categories such as architectural designs, crafts, modern and contemporary art in the collection, displaying 5 thousand works from ancient times to the present. Adjacent to the New Munch Museum and having a total area of 55 thousand square meters, the complex will be able to host temporary exhibitions along with its permanent collection. The Norwegian National Art Museum, intended to be a symbol of the city and a cultural meeting point, is planned to open in June 2022.
Fotografiska, Berlin / Shanghai
Fotografiska, one of the largest photography museums in the world and based in Stockholm, canceled the opening of its London campus due to the pandemic and Brexit. The museum has come to the fore with its re-growth projects, and is preparing to open the doors of the Shanghai campus in the autumn of 2022 and the Berlin campus in the winter months. Fotografiska Shanghai, which will be the first location of Fotografiska in Asia, will be housed in a 4,637 square meter warehouse building in the Suzhou Creek area, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century and carries the industrial heritage of the period. The building was redesigned by Neri & Hu, who have worked on buildings that have become the symbol of the city. Kunsthaus Tacheles, which will be the venue of the Fotografiska Berlin campus, is a shopping center building built in 1907. Herzog & de Meuron, who designed M+, undertakes the exterior renovation of the building, while the interior is designed by Studio Aisslinger. The next campus of Fotografiska is planned to open in Miami in 2023.
Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp
Established in 1810, the Royal Antwerp Museum of Fine Arts was closed in 2011 for renovations and development. The courtyards owned by the museum in Belgium over the past ten years have been transformed, increasing the exhibition space capacity by 40 percent, and restoration work has been carried out on the exterior. With the added skylights, redesigned gallery spaces and technological improvements, the museum is aiming to adapt to the future. In order to enhance the museum experience of the visitors, the new areas were added to the building with a 1 million-pound steel construction creating a contrast with the original building. The old and the new are considered as a whole in the works, for which € 100 million is spent. The collection, which includes works from 14th to 20th centuries, will open its doors to its visitors in September 2022.
Orange County Museum of Art, California
Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA), whose new building will open in October 2022, focuses on 20th and 21st century art. The museum, which was first opened in Newport Beach in 1962, includes the works of artists with a connection to California. The museum’s collection mainly consists of early and mid-century artworks. However, it continues to be one of the most influential art and cultural institutions of the region by supporting local artists today. The new OCMA building, a cultural campus In Costa Mesa, which began construction in 2019, will also act as a bridge between the Segerstrom Arts Center and Julia & George Argyros Plaza. The building is aimed to be completed for the 2022 California Biennial, was designed with the idea of being a community center, with an emphasis on open spaces. In addition to its permanent collection, the building, which is designed to host temporary exhibitions, has a multi-purpose show center with an education center of approximately one thousand square meters.
