Great Women Artists

‘Great Women Artists’ has published last month by Phaidon publications, it suggests a completely different outlook towards the art history.

The book can be considered as an encyclopedic resource. It contains works and biographies of women artists who had lived or lives in 50 different geographies. The line drawn on the Women’s word on the cover of the book is considered as a reference to male-dominated art history books. Chronologically, it begins from the 15th century and extends to the present day.

The book includes over 400 women artists who have worked with different disciplines. It contains well-known artists such as Maria Abramovic, Niki de Saint Phalle, Yayoi Kusama, but also the artists whose names are not known at all or known in the period of their era but not written in the art history books such as; Angelica Kauffmann, Judith Layster and Artemisia Gentileschi. The book’s title is based on an article published in 1971 by the well-known feminist art historian Linda Nochlin, ‘Why There Are No Great Women Artists?’
