Ebru Nalan Sülün’s “Collecting Contemporary Art in Turkey” book, which is published in 2019, is among the few studies that examine the Turkish art scene within the framework of art collections. In her book, Sülün, deals with the historical development of art collecting in Turkey from the Ottoman Empire to the present day in parallel with economic changes. The work focuses on the liberal economy which showed its effects in Turkey in the 1980s, and how it resulted in creating art collections, and how these collections later turned into private museums in the 1990s and onwards. Sülün also features the debates that are focused on private museums and the impact of auctions, exhibitions, competitions, and fairs on collecting. The study, which focuses on the development stories of Turkey’s leading art collections and private museums such as Elgiz, Sabancı, Eczacıbaşı, and Kıraç and their impact on the art market in the country.
