Art in Istanbul’s Historic Space: İş Sanat’s New Museum

Following Casa Botter on Istiklal Street, where traces of art, history and culture can be seen all around, one of the newest art venues opened by İş Sanat on October 29th is the Isbank Painting and Sculpture Museum. The Painting and Sculpture Museum, a gift of İş Sanat to the centenary of the Republic of Turkey, which consists of a comprehensive and extensive collection where you can trace the development of Turkish painting, can be visited free of charge until the end of 2023.

In the Beyoğlu branch of Isbank, which was located in the Baudouy Apartment Building for many years, İş Sanat continues its mission to protect cultural heritage by opening the Painting and Sculpture Museum. The museum contains nearly 600 works of art from the Isbank Art Collection. Beginning in 1939 with three works from the first State Painting and Sculpture Exhibition, the collection was enriched in terms of quality and quantity with works from the Independent Painters and Sculptors’ Union, Group D, People’s Houses and CHP Dormitory Exhibitions. On two floors of the Baudouy Building, the collection is on display, and on the other two floors, a temporary exhibition of Istanbul landscapes, titled The Picturing Istanbul, showcases the works of important artists of Turkish painting. The exhibition organization can be followed chronologically, thematically and conceptually.

Temporary Collection Exhibition: “Picturing Istanbul”

Starting from the Historic Peninsula, this unique exhibition starts from the European side of the Bosphorus, then continues to the Anatolian side and ends at the Maiden’s Tower and the Islands. Thus, the neighborhoods are visited from different angles; from time to time looking from the hills, from time to time descending to the shores with the impressions reflected on the canvas, as if on a ferry journey from port to port. In addition to their artistic value, the paintings in the exhibition are mostly important visual documents of mid-20th century Istanbul. The various names of the neighborhoods, such as Istanbul’s Flowers, Istanbul’s Boats, Istanbul’s Streets, Istanbul’s Fish and Istanbul’s Seasons, illustrate some of the city’s unique layers.

The acrylic installation made by Feyzi Karakoç in 2023 in memory of Baudouy Apartment, made from the wooden doors uncovered during the restoration of the apartment building, and the elevator, which was preserved and added to the architectural project, also stand out as pieces of history.

Baudouy Apartment Transformed into a Museum Building

Ertuğ Uçar and Mehmet Kütükçüoğlu are the architects of the transformation of the historic building into the Museum of Painting and Sculpture. All the processes of the long restoration work carried out by Teğet Architecture in accordance with the museum building project while preserving the historical texture of the Baudouy Apartment can be examined with models and videos. There is a museum shop and cafe at the entrance of the Baudouy Apartment, and a restaurant is planned to open on the terrace floor of the building next year. The museum can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday between 10.00 – 18.30.
