Velvet Buzzsaw, Netflix’s recent release, tells the story of a set of terrifying events that take place after the discovery of a late outsider artist’s paintings. Released on the 1st of February 2019, the movie explores the dynamics of the art world. Although film critics criticized Velvet Buzzsaw’s non-accurate portrayal of the art world and its characters’ lack in depth, it has still become highly popular with its cast including stars like Jake Gyllenhaal, Toni Collette and Billy Magnussen, vivid scenes set in art galleries and world art fairs like Art Basel and its colorful and fabulous outfits.
Directed by Dan Gilroy, Velvet Buzzsaw poses criticisms to the system and society from the lens of the art world. A star name, a very difficult art dealer, Worf Vandewalt, a cold art gallery owner and a highly ambitious art assistant, discover unknown paintings by a late outsider artist. The paintings which fascinate Vandewalt, who finds only a few artworks worthy, begin to come to life and attack their owners. Things take a terrifying turn as these animated paintings start to haunt their onlookers and seek revenge on all people who become part of the system and let the greed take over the art.
