Located in the heart of Moscow, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is an extraordinary museum with its archive and leading position in research. Privately founded in 2008 by Dasdha Zhukova ve Roman Abramovich, the Garage Museum is not only important with its archive collections but also it is the first contemporary art institituon in Russia.
The Museum collection is rooted in private collections of Dasha Zhukova ve Roman Abramovich. Departing from this point, the collection grew day by day with acquisitions and donations. Today it reflects Russian Contemporary art from the 1950s through the present, and sheds light on recent and current developments in international platform of arts and culture.
The Garage Museum underlines the importance of artistic dialogue and creativity. To pursue this, it built an archive collection, which is also one of the most dintinguishing features of the Museum. Moreover, it plays an active role in areas of research and publishing, and hence opens new horizons for art lovers. While encouraging art research and publishing with archive collections, it also fosters learning and education through its events and programs.
The archive collection contains physical and digital materials that consist of the Garage Museum’s archival materials, and contributions of other leading galleries and private collections. The XL Gallery, Aidan Gallery, and Leonid Talochkin’s private collection are of key contributions to the collection. With its rich collections, and leading position in art research and dialogue, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is a growing treasure of Moscow.
