The National Gallery Prague, namely Narodnie Galerie, is one of the treasures of beautiful Prague, Czech Republic. As a state institution, it has a rooted history, which dates back to the end of the 19th century. It was founded by a group of aristocrat and middle-class intellectuals, who aimed at elevating arts to the public. It initally served as the Academy of Fine Arts and the Picture Gallery. With over 400.000 objects in its collection, it hosts the largest collection of arts in the Czech Republic.
Narodni Galerie can be seen as a museum complex. Its rich collections that grew with donations and acquisitions are distributed amongst a variety of buildings that are located in different locations. For example, the Kinsy Palace contains some works from the Baroque Period and the Asia Collection, whereas the Frstat Castle preserves important examples of the 19th century Czech Art. The most well-known works of art and major highlights from the collection are exhibited in city center. Located in the Hradcanske Square, the Sternberg Palace is the main building of the Gallery.
In large halls of the Sternberg Palace, the most important works of European art history are waiting to be seen. Organized thematically and chronologically, this building takes visitors to a journey from the Middle Ages to the 19th century art, all way to the 20th and the 21st centuries. During time travel, visitors are accompanied by great masters and artists. Picasso, Klimt, Van Gogh, Miro, Cezanne… Each and more of these great names greet us in the Narodni Galerie, which has a room devoted to Picasso and his artistic production, where it exhibits 2 self-portraits.
